You might have read about dressing in your season’s colors based on “Color Me Beautiful” theory, but have you actually applied this knowledge to your wardrobe? Maybe you were skeptical of the theory, or thought the idea of wearing only certain colors is limiting. Maybe you are not exactly sure what season you are and what are your specific shades? And most importantly, how exactly do you apply all this information while shopping for clothes with overwhelming store selections?…
The whole point of wearing your colors is that you look your best with minimal effort (meaning you can go light on makeup and hair styling).
Buying clothing in flattering to you colors doesn’t cost any more than buying opposing colors that make you look washed-out and tired… So, why would you want to buy and wear something that doesn’t do your beauty any justice?
Let me demystify the process by breaking down the theory in a simple manner and showing you on examples below, what to do and not to do!
Let’s start with SPRING color type:
Just like spring season in nature with its fresh sprouting greens and blooming flowers , sunlit atmosphere of happy, warm tones, women of spring color are tender, sparkling, sunny, light, airy, radiant, blooming, cheerful, and bright. They seem to glow from the inside. Their beauty is not overdone, but very natural and fresh.
Think “spring sunny day”, “flower beds with blooming flowers”, these images conjure up spring colors perfect for this type of beauty.
Now lets compare and see how black looks on a Spring women.
Kate Blanchet with her radiant, lit from within skin, and delicate coloring is a Spring, and she looks glowing on the left.
On the right, we see a different story, because a dramatic total black overwhelmes her tender beauty, by zeroing in on imperfections and washing her out.
Moving on to a second WARM color type, which is AUTUMN.
Think what words we use to describe autumn: abundant, magnificient, vivid, harvest, while conjuring up colors of gold, amber, yellow, orange, and rich earthy tones.
That’s the palette for autumn beauties, who are themselves, bold and confident women, usually, with notice-me-rich-tone hair. Many redheads are this type.
Autumn ladies are bright, warm, luxurious, and extravagant. They always make a vivid impression.
Do you think black is Autumn’s color?
Compare Julia Roberts in green and in black. Do you see how black does nothing for her gorgeous golden skin and auburn hair?
Next up is SUMMER, which is a COOL type.
What do you imagine when thinking about summer?
Carefree, breezy, cool, dreamy, hazy, humid, languorous, lyrical, mellow, mild, relaxing, active, blazing, steamy, sizzling, hot …
Notice the contradictions? That’s because summer girls are chamelions! They can look girly, sporty, or femme fatale, depending on their clothes, make up, and hair.
Summer girls are lucky to have a very wide variety of colors complementary to them, but there’s a catch! These colors need to have a cool blue undertone to them and/or “dustiness”, for example “dusty rose” color.
Is black a summer color?
Nope. It is also too harsh for their delicate and elegant coloring.
Are you are wondering yet, if anyone looks good in black?
Yes, it’s WINTER ladies! Also, a COOL color type.
Winter is all about high contrast. Think black tree branches againts pure white snow, or brilliant sun shining so bright we reach for sunglasses or ski goggles on the snow slopes.
Winter women look great in high contrast colors, so bring on graphic black and white, dramatic black and red ensembles, or even black total looks. Fushia, cobalt blue, and chartreuse also suits them, while neutral shades, such as nudes and beiges wash them out.
Take a look at these stunners. They have too much contrast in their coloring and need clothes to be the same. The soft muted colors belong to other types.
That’s a quick overview of 4 color types or seasons.
How to know which one are you? Take a look at your skin tone, eyes and hair color. That’s what determines your season! Not the colors that you prefer, or are in trend, and definitely, not the infamous black, which is everyone’s go-to color.
Now of course, there are tricks you can do to get away with wearing NOT your colors, wearing achromatic colors ( white, black, grey), and trendy fashion-forward colors, you just need to insert them smartly into your wardrobe.
