I love traveling and packing for your travels is an integral part. You can hate it and throw in random things into the bag right before your plane leaves, but I rather enjoy packing and came up with my own system for efficient packing. Here are my top traveling tips! Hope it helps you. Happy adventures!
“He who would travel happily must travel light.”
– Antoine de Saint Exupery
Start by thinking about what occasions will you be dressing for.
For example, my upcoming trip, will be a mixture of cultural sightseeing: museums, galleries, bazaars, discovering local cuisine, and lots of chillin’ on the beach.
For all of that a versatile wardrobe is a must! Because a pair of tattered shorts and a tank is fine at the beach, but will look out of place among the fine treasures of an Art Museum or during a dinner at a posh restaurant. So, I start with a few sundresses in classic summer materials: cotton, linen, and silk, few casual tops and a silk shell, shorts, a skirt, and a lightweight linen jacket.
Then, I see how I can take those things from day to night. That’s achieved with accessories, of course!
Accessories are everything! Don’t underestimate their power, especially in traveling! Instead of lugging around extra sets of clothes, think how you can transform the same clothes for a different feel.
For example, if I’m wearing a summer dress with flip-flops and walking around town during the day, a comfortable, casual look is achieved. But for dinner, I’ll switch the flip-flops for a pair of beautiful metallic sandals and put on a gleaming, gold statement necklace. Voila! The look just went from casual to special!
Or I can pile on an armful of bangles that I found at a local bazaar and grab a gorgeous unique clutch.
If it’s chilly in the air, I’ll wrap my shoulders in a vibrant print scarf….
Recognize the possibilities to transfer a look! As Tim Gunn says: “Make it work!”
Another point I have to touch upon is color. Color is genius! It doesn’t take any more space than, say black or grey, yet it makes a tremendous difference in your appearance.
Pack only the most flattering colors to your complexion, hair and eye color. Is there a thing you wear that always turns heads? Pack that! We can use that extra shot of flattering color when jet-legged and not looking our most radiant.
Also, we all love to take photos. Bright colors look great on camera.
My summer hits are turquoise and coral. Always stunning with a tan and beachy hair.
Another favorite of mine is white! Maybe not the most practical of colors, but the glamorous jet-set vibe it gives is worth it! So, I’m packing a pair of white shorts and/or capris and a white tank.
And again, think how you can push these pieces to work overtime. In my case, I’ll wear the white shorts with a tank to the beach, then put on a dressier top and the previously-mentioned metallic sandals for the evening. I’ll add jewelry of course, say some gold hoops and a cuff bracelet.
If you are stuck deciding between similar items, i.e. several tops, pack the ones that are the most versatile and flattering. If this top goes great with those short for daytime and pairs beautifully with this skirt for a night, then take it! But if it’s one dimensional, then leave it out.
Try everything out in front of a mirror. Re-style items, layer them, think outside the box. Then take photos of outfits, so you don’t have to think about any of those things when you are traveling and can concentrate on exploring and having fun.
You’ll know you look great and feel confident & comfortable!
