In this post, I will cover all the major styles, from which the smaller ones grow. This overview will help you see fashion in a clearer way, understand trends better, and pick which styles are your best fit!
There are 5 major style blocks, from which smaller styles venture.
Style Block #1 is CLASSIC.
At its core lies the concept of expensive simplicity.
Main characteristics of a Classic style is that the top and bottom has to be of the same color and material!
Typical Ensembles are:
Jacket + Skirt
Jacket + Pants
In classic color palette (grey, black, navy) of non-textured, natural fabric. As you can see there’s not much room to express your personality.
Many people dress this way or define themselves in this way. Truth is it’s the most constricted and sober way to dress, suitable only if you work in SUPER conservative environment.
So, let’s move on to the biggest style block that includes pretty much everything of what we actually wear!
Style Block #2 is SPORT.
At its core lies the concept freedom and comfort.
This is what most of us mean when we say “classic style”. In “elegant city” the look is elegant, but not restricted to a certain color palette, materials, or texture.
It’s perfectly fine for the jacket to be of different color and texture. That’s what makes this style way more fun and expressive.
There are so many ensembles that you can create in this style:
Shirt + Jacket + Pants + Accessories
Top + Pants + Accessories
Top + Jacket + Skirt + Accessories
Sweater + Skirt + Accessories
Jumpsuit + Accessories
Dress + Jacket + Accessories
And so on!
Factor in that the items can be in any color, material, with numerous details and accessories…, and you can see the possibilities are endless! Perfect for work, but also for going out! It’s that day-to-night style, that accomodates so many modern women.
Similar to “Elegant City”, but “Dynamic City” uses jeans as the base of the look.
Jeans + Tee + Accessories
Jeans + Sweater + Accessories
Jeans + Top + Jacket/Coat + Accessories
Jeans + Shirt+ Accessories
Jeans + … well, you get the idea 😉
Just like the name suggests, it’s a more casual take on the above style. Think:
Tee + Jeans + Keds
Sweater/Sweatshirt + Jeans + Sneakers
Accessories are kept to a minimum. Palette is usually neutral or achromatic.
This style block also includes uniform-inspired styles, such as, Military, Safari, and Nautical. The great thing about these styles is that they never really go out of fashion.
MILITARY + (another style)
As far as ensembles go, you probably won’t be wearing full on military attire, but rather have 1 iterm, like a great military coat, so the look is military inspired, but not costumey.
Think wild life sight-seeing in Africa.
Again, you probably won’t be wearing full-on safari look, but rather wear something safari-inspired with something else.
SAFARI + (another style)
At the core of this style is the Navy uniform.
Color palette: White and Blue. (Can be with a touch of red.)
NAUTICAL + (another style)
For example, nautical-inspired top mixed in with jeans and jacket/coat.
PREPPY, EQUASTRIAN, DANDY all belong under this style block as well.
Style Block #3 is FANTASY.
Substyles: Feminine, Dramatic, Artistic, and Romantic.
Lets break it down one by one.
At the core of this style lies a dress.
For summer, its flowing dresses made of silk and chiffon, for winter – wool, knit dresses, and sweater-dresses. Wrap dresses.
Feminine prints and color palettes.
Dramatic is all about contrast! Best for Winter Color Types, or at least Contrasting subtypes, like Contrasting Summer, for example.
DRAMATIC + (another style)
Great for Style Types who have some Drama in their features, but it’s mixed with something else. Or maybe it’s just a touch of drama, for example, in a shoe, jewelry or make up.
Best example is Carrie from “Sex and the City”
Too much of everything and at the same time. This style works best for people in creative fields.
Just what you expect: pastel colors, lots of ruffles, sweet and girly.
ROMANTIC + (another style)
If you find that full-on Romantic is just too sweet, try to mix it with other stylistic direction, for example, Romantic + Sport. That would make it more everyday-friendly.
And this is how you personilize a style and make it your own: by tweaking the colors that are complimentary to your Color Type, mixing in things from other styles, pairing it with different accessories, etc.
Style Block #4 is ETHNIC.
East-Inspired + (another style)
NATIVE AMERICAN + (another style)
SPANISH + (another style)
WESTERN + (another style)
BOHO + (another style)
Style Block #5 is AVANT-GARDE.
Subtypes are: Minimalism, Deconstructivism, and Conceptualism.
But all this is just the beginning of a style journey. How do you choose style(s) and make sure it truly fits you?
